They banned the books. They didn’t ban us.
In Florida, they pulled And Tango Makes Three — a picture book about penguins — off library shelves because two of the penguins are male and they raise a chick together. They removed dictionaries. They restricted access to encyclopedias. They sent teachers home for having the wrong title visible in the background of a Zoom call.
They called it protecting children.
What they were actually protecting was ignorance. Because ignorant people are easier to govern. Curious people ask questions. Readers develop empathy. Children who learn the full, complicated, beautiful and sometimes ugly truth about history and humanity tend to grow up and vote against the people who tried to hide it from them.
Ron DeSantis understood that. Which is why he came for the books first.
Banned in Florida Club exists because every banned book is a map of exactly what they’re afraid of. We read those books. We talk about those books. We send those books. We put the banned list on a t-shirt and wear it to the school board meeting.
Florida is not just a state. It’s a preview. What happens here is coming to your state next — if it isn’t already there.
Join the Banned in Florida Club. Read dangerously. Think freely. Never stop.
